Ma l’intervento non riesce e il paziente muore, dopo circa trenta ore, in seguito a una crisi di rigetto complicata da polmonite e insufficienza renale. Cooley finisce sotto accusa e la temerarietà dell’intervento gli vale l’espulsione dalla Baylor University.

Description: In 1969 Dr. Denton Cooley, in collaboration with Dr. Michael Debakey and Dr. Domingo Liotta, performed an artificial heart transplant for the first time in the history of medicine. The graft is performed in an attempt to save the life of a patient who is in a desperate condition and is waiting for a donor. The man, aged forty-seven, survives thanks to this device for sixty-two hours. Two days after the implantation of the artificial heart the announcement of the “miracle accomplished”: the donor was found. But the operation fails and the patient dies, after about thirty hours, following a severe crisis complicated by pneumonia and kidney failure. Cooley ends up under accusation and the unconsciousness of the intervention is worth his expulsion from Baylor University.
