Descrizione: Rosalind Franklin, nata nel 1920, ha conseguito la laurea in chimica presso l’Università di Cambridge nel 1941 e il suo dottorato di ricerca nel 1945. Lavorò costantemente in laboratorio fino a quando le fu diagnosticato un cancro alle ovaie nel 1956 che le causò la morte nel 1958 all’età di 37 anni. Si ipotizza che i suoi anni di lavoro con i raggi X, durante i quali prese poca o nessuna precauzione contro le radiazioni, abbiano contribuito alla sua morte.  Franklin fu una scienziata straordinaria a tal punto da risultare determinante nella scoperta della struttura a doppia elica del DNA. Fu proprio grazie alla sua “Photo 51”, una fotografia a raggi X, che nel 1953 Francis Crick, James Watson e Maurice Wilkins giunsero a tale scoperta. Non ha mai avuto il riconoscimento che avrebbe meritato.

Description: Rosalind Franklin, born in 1920, received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Cambridge University in 1941 and her Ph.D. in 1945. She worked constantly in the laboratory until she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1956. Franklin died in 1958 at age 37. There is speculation that her years of work with X-rays, during which she took little if any precaution against radiation, contributed to her death. Franklin was an extraordinary scientist who was instrumental in the discovery of the DNA’s double-helix structure in 1953 by Francis Crick, James Watson and Maurice Wilkins. She was an expert at crystallography and took the first photos that eventually led James Watson to figure out the structure of the DNA. She never got the credit she deserved.
