Descrizione: Dopo aver combattuto per rovesciare la dinastia Qing, nel 1912 Chiang Kai-Shek aderì al Kuomintang, assumendone dopo pochi anni le redini. Fu arrestato da alcuni suoi stessi ufficiali nel cosiddetto “incidente di Xi’an” e liberato solo dopo essersi impegnato a intraprendere la resistenza armata contro le truppe nipponiche. Nemmeno il generoso aiuto degli Stati Uniti bastò a Chiang Kai-shek per portare a termine la sua missione. Anzi nel 1949, mentre Mao faceva nascere la repubblica popolare cinese, fu costretto a fuggire sull’isola di Taiwan dove fu il presidente di un regime autoritario fino alla fine dei suoi giorni (1975).

Description: After fighting to overthrow the Qing dynasty, in 1912 Chiang Kai-shek joined the Kuomintang, taking the control and starting to lead it after a few years. He was arrested by some of his own officers in the so-called accident of Xi’an” and freed only after undertaking armed resistance against Japanese troops. Not even the generous help of the United States was enough to Chiang Kai-shek to complete his mission. Indeed in 1949, while Mao gave birth to the People’s Republic of China, he was forced to flee to the island of Taiwan where he was the president of an authoritarian regime until the end of his days (1975).
