His songs dealt with themes such as pain, moral affliction and redemption. In the two-year period 1968-69, he published the famous albums Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (1968) and Johnny Cash at San Quentin (1969). Both live albums, recorded in high security prisons in front of an audience of inmates, are met with great critical and public success.
