Suo padre, Louis Ginsberg, era un poeta e un professore di liceo e la madre, Naomi Livergant Ginsberg, era affetta da una rara malattia psicologica che non venne mai correttamente diagnosticata ed era anche un membro attivo del Partito Comunista. Da adolescente, Ginsberg cominciò a scrivere lettere al New York Times su questioni politiche, come la seconda guerra mondiale e i diritti dei lavoratori. Nel 1956 pubblica il poema Urlo (Howl) nella raccolta “Howl and Other Poems” presso la City Lights Bookstore di Lawrence Ferlinghetti; la pubblicazione causò l’arresto di Ferlinghetti per diffusione di contenuti osceni. Howl ha segnato una svolta nella poesia contemporanea: è una ballata psichedelica, un grido di dolore e protesta contro l’America, un viaggio nella mente dell’autore. L’opera insieme ad “On the road” di Jack Kerouac è comunemente ritenuta il manifesto della Beat Generation.

Description: He was born on June 3, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey, to a Jewish family and grew up in nearby Paterson. His father, Louis Ginsberg, was a poet and a high school teacher and his mother, Naomi Livergant Ginsberg, was suffering from a rare psychological illness that was never correctly diagnosed and was also an active member of the Communist Party. As a teenager, Ginsberg began writing letters to the New York Times on political issues, such as World War II and workers’ rights. In 1956 he published the poem Urlo (Howl) in the collection “Howl and Other Poems” at the City Lights Bookstore by Lawrence Ferlinghetti; the publication caused Ferlinghetti to be arrested for spreading obscene content. Howl marked a turning point in contemporary poetry: it is a psychedelic ballad, a cry of pain and protest against America, a journey into the mind of the author. The work together with “On the road” by Jack Kerouac is commonly considered the manifesto of the Beat Generation.
